My topic was the correlation between age and teenage pregnancy; however I found a multitude of research on my topic and facts. People felt that because a man was older dating teen women leads to a higher teen pregnancy rate. My question I wanted to answer with this research was which is worse having a teenage woman date a man her own age or an older one? I got excellent information on my issue as to why most teen women date older men. Young teen women are more likely to date an older man than their own and age and the topic is close to me because I prefer to date older men and I want to see if that has any connection with getting pregnant.
Facts were seven out of every ten births were fathered by an adult whom is twenty-one years or older. (Adult-Teen Sex). This leads me to think it is an issue when teen women date older men. Older men father almost two-thirds of children to teens and those men were normally two to five years older. This is due to not enough sexual education, or the lack of informing the men about the teen pregnancy rate and how they contribute. This made me want to know reasons of why older men chose teen girls and vice versa.
The few reasons I found were that teen girls thought older men to be more mature and have more experience when it comes to a relationship. They also felt in the chance of getting pregnant the older man was more likely to be able to support the child that they would have. Older men dated teenage women because they were half as likely to have an abortion when they had partners who were 20 or older. (Sins against Fathers by Joseph P. Shapiro). Older men felt with teen women, the women were less likely to have diseases, and the men would have more power over their partner in the relationship. Each side was equally intricate as to reasons why they chose the age difference.
There are steps in trying to prevent such a high risk, but does it matter if these young women choose those situations because that is what they want? "I believe that because teenage women chose to date older men they are going into the relationship knowing there is that risk.”It takes two to tango", and both men and women are responsible in making a child."(Linda Feldman, Christian Science Monitor). Fifty-five percent for seventeen year olds are on both sides the mother and the father; however others have the same situation. Some action is taking place in teaching both parties the risks they are taking.
In conclusion, I was able to answer my question and get more information as to why teen women date older men. In my next memo, I plan to answer what would happen if teen women were to date men their own age. I was considering changing another one of my research questions, so that I can have a strong answer to my topic. I learned new and motivating facts about my topic that lead me to new conclusions, other questions to look at, and possible tasks in fixing the issues. I hope to find much more information and maybe answer my other questions, because this is a major issue for all teen women.
